Ladies and gents and everyone in between, welcome to a rant about a website seemingly hellbent on destroying people's creativity! No, not YouTube. That's a rant for another day. I'm talking about the Bad Webcomics Wiki.
What is that anyway?
Oohohohoh.. you poor soul..
The best way I can describe the Bad Webcomics Wiki is that they're like the CinemaSins of webcomics. Finding whatever comic they can find and nitpicking it for all it's worth. That's something CinemaSins does as well, only with them it's movies. Actually, there's a lot of similarities between CinemaSins and the BWW that I can infer going through the site. So let's talk about why I can't stand the Bad Webcomics Wiki.
First things first, I want to make this clear: I am speaking for other artists here. Neither Codename Rei or Catgirls & Wizardry have been "featured" on the site, and I hope it stays that way. In a perfect world, barely any webcomics "featured" would even have a page on that site.
Alright, now that that's out of the way..
On to the rant!
For starters, let's talk about the nitpicking. Oh, the nitpicking. You could honestly convince someone that this and CinemaSins were run by the same people. Mimicking your favorite creators has always been a thing, I get that, I've seen a handful of folks who leaned into wanting to be like AVGN, but there's a difference between AVGN and CinemaSins. AVGN is actually entertaining, whereas all CinemaSins does is nitpick and complain about the latest horror flick around. That leads into my whole point of this mindscrew analogy; the people running the BWW really remind me of CinemaSins.
All they do is needlessly criticize and complain about whatever webcomic they feel 'deserves it', ranging from webcomics like Da Pukas or Sabrina Online, which don't really 'deserve it', to something like Sonichu. With Sonichu, I could maybe understand, since I tried reading it and I couldn't really follow the plot (that and the behind-the-scenes things), but with Sabrina and ESPECIALLY Da Pukas, I could follow the plot, and nothing about either of those comics really justified a page on your busted-ass site. Also, I've just now noticed this typing this out; why are a noticeable amount of webcomics on there furry comics?
No really, that's a genuine question. There are a bunch of furry comics on that site that are just constantly nitpicked to no end, and from what I've seen, the main argument of theirs is "oh, well it's a furry comic". Hell, they've even 'reviewed' frikkin' Perki Goth Candi Raver! That ended in 2008! You know how hard it is to even find that comic anymore? I, the guy who knows what a bad comic looks like, am gobsmacked. As in, I feel like smacking my gob. That sounds like a really weird innuendo.
They also seem to have a vendetta against sprite comics too. According to these people, sprite comics are automatically lazy.. because they use sprites. That's it. That's their argument as to why sprite comics are bad. Sure, why not? Let's ignore the fact that a fair amount of them are actually creative and, most importantly, funny. I've read a few sprite comics in my time, and I can tell you that all of them made me laugh in some way or another, be it their plots or their humor.
Humor, that the Bad Webcomics Wiki doesn't have. I've looked through their site multiple times and I can not tell you their humor, or their style, beyond 'hurr durr durr, we're so cool because we hate webcomics'. Well guess what, news flash..
You aren't.
Listen, Bad Webcomics Wiki. Complaining and nitpicking furry comics because they're made by furries is not cool. Aggressively criticizing sprite comics for being "lazy" isn't cool. Making fun of all-around decent comics because it's how you get your sick kicks isn't cool. In fact..
Listen to Sonic too. He isn't wrong. You guys are stifling people's creativity and ripping into creative works seemly just because. And for what? What does this gain out of anybody? I'll tell you: positively nothing. Unless this is how you guys get your enjoyment out of the day, which if that is the case, then please go outside and touch some goddamn grass. And while you're out there touching that nice patch of grass, think about why being CinemaSins for webcomics is maybe not such a good idea.
And now..
A message from me, to fellow webcomic artists..
Don't let those fools at the BWW stop you from making a webcomic. Whatever ideas you have, go for it. You don't even have to learn HTML to get your comic out there. Before my switch to Neocities, I hosted my comics at Blogspot. I may not have the fondest retrospective of my old work, and that can come. You might feel regret looking back on your old drawings. But, at the very least, I didn't have any regrets making the comics or hosting them. My point here is, no matter what your comic is, where it's hosted, be it Blogspot or ComicFury, hell, even Neocities, just however you put your work out onto the world, be proud of what you accomplish. Everyone has differing senses of humor. They may not like your work, not everyone will. Criticism is good, it can help, however it has to be criticism you can actually look back and build upon, and not whatever BWW is doing.
In short, ignore the Bad Webcomics Wiki, and get your ideas out there. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Stay saucy, peeps. Buckwheat64 singing off.
